The Orlando Magic may have made the steal of free agency when they signed shooting guard Jonathan Simmons this offseason. The Magic also got Simmons on a solid contract which is a three-year deal worth 18 million dollars.

Simmons had himself a breakout season with the San Antonio Spurs where he proved to be a solid bench player. However, it was not until Kawhi Leonard went down with an ankle injury in the playoffs, did Simmons really prove his value. In the series clinching game against the Houston Rockets, Simmons scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. He then played lockdown defense against arguably the best offensive player in the game in James Harden.

While the Spurs got crushed by the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, Simmons still showed flashes of becoming a solid two-way player in this league.

That is why when San Antonio lifted the restriction on Simmons’ contract, he was highly sought after by several teams and eventually left the Spurs for the Magic.

Orlando is really starting to put together a solid team in which could be competing for a playoff spot next year in a declining Eastern Conference. Elfrid Payton has risen to become one of the up-and-coming point guards next season. Aaron Gordon has the potential to be the Eastern Conference’s Blake Griffin and the sky is the limit for what rookie small forward Jonathon Isaac can achieve in his first year playing professional basketball.

Simmons will fit in perfectly with this young squad. With being so young, the Magic are bound to struggle defensively, so having Simmons as the anchor of this defense will benefit them immensely as well as him being another scoring option for the team. If Orlando can continue to add depth to the roster, then the Magic will most definitely be a competitive team next season at the very least.
